Unit 1 Maps and Geographic Skills	Unit one covers basic map skills such as absolute and relative location, parts of a map, types of maps, map projections, mental maps, and practical applications of geography at the local and regional level. Students will also have to know several different tools geographers use, in particular the Geographic Information System (GIS).

Unit 2 Physical Geography	Unit two covers plate tectonics, erosion and weathering, landforms, volcanoes, earthquakes, climate zones, weather, and vegetation regions. This unit contains a lot of information and specialized vocabulary. Students normally have problems in two areas, climate zones and vegetation regions.

Unit 3 Cultural Geography	Unit three covers all aspects of culture to include basic ideas such as cultural diffusion, innovations, and acculturation. One major theme of this unit is conflict created by culture. Ethnic cleansing and genocide is discussed as well as religious conflicts around the world. Perhaps the most difficult idea in this unit is regions. Students are encouraged to listen to the podcast on regions.

Unit 4 Economic Geography	Economic geography covers resources, economic activity, economic systems, and economic unions. This unit emphasizes synthesis and application over memorization. It is not enough to memorize types of resources. Students should be able to describe how resource availability affects industrial development and why there are wide discrepancies between rich and poor countries in the world.

Unit 5 Population Geography	Population geography covers characteristics of human population and examines the differences in population growth between countries, especially in the developing and developed world. Population geography also looks at human migration and the forces that cause migration, both positive and negative. The second half of this unit covers urban geography.
